Welcome to the “Prettiest Town in Dixie”. I'm extremely proud to be the mayor of my hometown. Cheraw is known for its friendly people, well-maintained neighborhoods, great schools, active churches, incredible parks, low crime and low taxes. We strive to maintain our small town atmosphere, while offering unique advantages that provide professional and personal growth opportunities.
Located on the banks of the Great Pee Dee River, Cheraw is a beautiful antebellum town of approximately 6,000 people. Much of Cheraw is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the town is the birthplace of jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie.
Cheraw is in the heart of the two Carolinas, within an easy drive of the Atlantic Ocean and the Blue Ridge Mountains. We are also home to two challenging golf courses, and if you enjoy the great outdoors, Cheraw State Park is only minutes from our Town Green and offers a beautiful lake, camping, and walking trails.
Life is a little easier in Cheraw, giving residents more time to enjoy the simple pleasures of life. If you are already a part of our community, thank you. If you are considering relocating your home or business to Cheraw, or considering a visit, please do. I promise you won't be disappointed.
The Town Clerk's responsibilities are governed by the State of South Carolina Statutes and local ordinances. The Town Clerk also functions as City Clerk and Clerk of the Common Council. Duties involve maintaining records of land ownership, trade names, maps, cemetery deeds, election records, all city ordinances, minutes and proceedings of all council meetings and commission meetings. The office issues a variety of licenses such as dog licenses and business licenses. The Town Clerk is custodian of the city seal, administers oaths and plays a major role in primaries, elections and referendums.
The Cheraw Fire Department is a combination paid volunteer department located in eastern Chesterfield County, South Carolina. We have an ISO Class 3. The department is responsible for providing fire protection for the Town of Cheraw and the rural area out side the town limits. We do this with a total of 10 fulltime personnel. We have 9 on a 24/48-shift rotation and the Chief who works Mon-Fri. We depend heavily on our 19 on-call personnel to complete the department.
Daily responsibilities for the full-time staff included general cleaning around the station, cleaning and checking the equipment on the 9 trucks at the station, two
equipment trailers, and "other duties as needed". We also have an active Fire Prevention Program with station tours along with visits to school, civic clubs, and churches in the community. There are four full-time personnel that are fire/arson investigators that determine the cause and origin of fire. Four of our personnel are also certified State Fire Marshals that conduct inspection and pre-planning of local business and industry.
To establish and maintain protection to the general public from both natural and man-made emergencies, through establishing and maintaining properly trained and equipped personnel that will allow for the safe, effective response and mitigation of emergency incidents.
